GIFs with embeded HTML (circa 2004)
Fireworks (image editing software built at some point by Macromedia) had a feature that would allow the user to add some interactivity to images. It worked by exporting an html file, with an html map tag assigned to the image and some js to provide the interactivity. I just built a system where the user could upload all the files and then display them properly.
